The future of drone air traffic management relies on robust, real-time communication systems. U5-SPACE leverages 5G mobile networks to build a secure, latency-free communication infrastructure that enables:

This technological foundation allows for the safe integration of UAVs into regulated airspace, laying the groundwork for Urban Air Mobility (UAM).

A Technological Framework for Scalable UAV Operations

At the heart of U5-SPACE lies a robust and forward-looking technological architecture that combines cutting-edge communications, spatial intelligence, and automation. The platform integrates:

  • 5G communications networks, enabling ultra-low-latency, high-bandwidth, and cybersecure connectivity between UAVs, control centers, and service providers—crucial for real-time decision-making in dynamic airspace environments.
  • Geolocation and geofencing technologies, using high-resolution satellite imagery and GNSS data to define operational zones, enforce airspace restrictions, and support intelligent route planning.
  • AI-driven airspace management algorithms, designed to detect conflicts, prioritize flights, and optimize drone traffic flow through autonomous scheduling and pathfinding.
  • Integrated smart services, such as automatic flight authorization, traffic alerting, collision avoidance, and regulatory compliance monitoring—essential for the safe and seamless operation of multiple UAVs within complex urban or semi-urban environments.

U5-SPACE’s infrastructure is designed to be modular, scalable, and interoperable, allowing national authorities and U-Space service providers to adopt and expand capabilities as regulatory and operational needs evolve. Backed by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (NextGenerationEU) and funded through the CDTI, the project demonstrates a shared commitment to strengthening Europe’s leadership in aerial digital transformation.

Objetives

The iPlatform will enable a full spectrum of U-Space services, as required by Implementing Regulation 2021/664 EC:

Mandatory services:

  • Geoconsciousness Service: Live updates on airspace limitations and geographic zones
  • UAS Flight Authorization: Automated, conflict-free airspace coordination
  • Network Identification: Real-time UAV operator and flight status visibility
  • Traffic Information: Alerts on nearby air traffic

Optional services (as required by Member States):

  • Meteorological Information: Weather data before and during flights
  • Compliance Monitoring: Alerts when deviations from authorized paths occur
